Chapter 01
Motor or regulator: telling the two apart
They fail differently, and the difference is usually audible. If you press the switch and hear nothing at all, the motor or its supply is the first suspect. If you hear the motor running but the glass does not move, or moves crooked, or drops into the door, the regulator is the part that has let go.
A regulator is the scissor or cable mechanism that carries the glass up and down. Cable regulators fray and bind. Plastic guides crack, usually in the cold, which is why so many of these calls come in over an Omaha winter.

The tune up or replace call
Not every stuck window is a new part. Sometimes the track is dirty, the run channel has dried out, or a connector has corroded, and a clean and adjust puts it right for a fraction of the cost.
Our mechanics evaluate whether the assembly needs a tune up or a full replacement and tell you which, before the work starts. Some of it goes through insurance, so it is worth asking when you call.
Chapter 03
Getting the glass back in its track
The repair is not finished when the motor turns. Door glass has to sit square in its run channel or it will bind, whistle at speed, or leak at the top seal, and it will chew the new regulator the same way it chewed the old one.
So the glass gets set, the travel gets checked top to bottom, and the auto up and down is reset where the vehicle has it. Then the door card goes back on with its clips intact rather than half of them left in the tray.
