Chapter 01
Why lenses yellow and fog in the first place
Headlight lenses are polycarbonate, and polycarbonate does not survive ultraviolet light on its own. From the factory it carries a hard UV coating, and that coating is what actually fails: it breaks down, crazes, and goes cloudy while the plastic underneath is still sound.
That is why a foggy headlight is worth restoring rather than replacing. The expensive part of the assembly is fine. What has gone is a layer a few microns thick on the outside.

The sand, polish and seal pass
The failed coating has to come off, which means wet sanding through progressively finer grades until the surface is uniform and the yellowing is gone rather than smeared around.
Then it gets polished back to optical clarity, because a lens that is merely clean still scatters the beam if the surface is not smooth. Skipping straight to a polish is why so many kit jobs look good for a month.
Chapter 03
Keeping the clarity after we hand it back
The step that decides how long the job lasts is the last one. Bare polycarbonate with no coating will fog again within a season, because nothing is stopping the UV any more.
So the lens gets sealed. Done properly, restoration is a job you have done once and then forget about, not something you repeat every spring.
